Tesla No Longer Offering Trade-in Quotes

Tesla has stopped offering trade-in quotes through its site on custom orders.

Previously, Tesla had the ability to make a trade-in offer on any make or model of vehicle which customers could apply towards their new Tesla order.

They also offered trade-in offers on used Tesla’s, with Full Self-Driving only recently being incorporated into valuations — albeit at a rate that’s substantially less than the $10,000 cost of adding it as an option to a new vehicle.

According to the automaker, current delivery windows on its vehicles exceed the timeframe necessary to maintain accurate trade-in values.

Current delivery lead time for custom orders exceeds the validity period of our pre-order trade-in offers. You will be able to request an estimate once your order is placed and is approaching delivery. For quicker delivery, purchase an inventory vehicle.

Customers can still contact their Tesla advisor once their delivery date is approaching to request a quote, or purchase a vehicle from existing inventory.

The base configurations across Tesla’s entire lineup of Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X all hold delivery estimates of June 2022. The only exceptions are Model S Plaid and Model 3 Long Range/Performance, which are available for delivery as soon as next month.

Real Talk

It would be beneficial to lock in the currently-inflated values across the automotive industry that stem from a nationwide car shortage.

Much like the new vehicle market, including new Tesla’s which have had prices adjusted due to limited production capacity amidst strong consumer demand by as much as $15,000, the average used vehicle is selling for $5,000 over market value — or even higher.

Extended delivery timeframes aside, it’s incredibly difficult to predict what the market will be like in the 6–8 months it could take for a new Tesla to deliver. It has been predicted that these inflated trade-in values could extend well into 2022 as supply chains are still being impacted and chip shortages continue.

Regardless, the best way to get top dollar for a used Tesla is to sell it on a private marketplace such as Only Used Tesla. We’ve found that sellers can typically expect offers that are several thousand above Tesla’s own trade-in quote with minimal effort.

We can also help facilitate a quicker sale to a dealer or an instant-buying service such as Carvana or Vroom, which are currently offering thousands over market value due to strong demand.
