Tesla Adds a Second Battery Pack Option to Model 3 Standard Range Plus

Tesla is offering the option of a new battery pack for Model 3 Standard Range Plus, with several improvements that customers should consider.

Model 3 Standard Range Plus is now available with a lithium ion phosphate (LFP) battery, which is supplied out of China by a company called CATL.

Prospective buyers can find Model 3 Standard Range Plus vehicles with the new LFP cells exclusively in Tesla’s existing inventory for the time being. The current battery pack for Model 3 on Tesla’s configurator features nickel, cobalt, aluminum oxide (NCA) cells supplied by Panasonic in a 2170 cylindrical form factor produced at Tesla’s Nevada Gigafactory. The main difference to look out for is that the LFP cells provide an EPA-estimated range of 253 miles, whereas the standard battery pack offers a range of 263 miles.

However, due to the chemistry of the LFP pack it can sustain a daily charge level of 100%. It’s recommended that the traditional battery pack be charged to a maximum of 90% on a daily basis to maintain long-term battery health.

In that regard the LFP pack should in actuality provide over ten miles of additional usable range despite the range rating being ten miles less. Additionally, Supercharging should be notably quicker at levels above 70% state of charge as independent testing has indicated.

Tesla is reaching out specifically to Model 3 Standard Range Plus buyers with outstanding orders that won’t be delivered until the end of the year. The new battery pack is being offered as an option that’s available for delivery as early as next month, although there have already been a few listed for sale within Tesla’s existing inventory — there are twenty currently offered for sale within 200 miles of our zip code, which is a major feat in itself considering the nationwide car shortage.

Elon Musk stated on Twitter that he would “personally slightly opt for iron [LFP] pack, as it wants to be charged to 100%, whereas nickel prefers 90%.”

Pricing remains the same at $39,990 for both versions.

Real Talk

To simplify: the new LFP cells will be a better option for most customers. Since the battery can be charged to 100% on a daily basis, it theoretically provides more range consistently than the current battery while also simplifying the home charging routine and providing a better-sustained Supercharging rate.

Tesla has offered the LFP battery in Model 3 Standard Range Plus in Asia and Europe since it began production as the default battery pack at Gigafactory Shanghai during the fourth quarter of last year.

Long-term Musk plans to transition all Standard Range vehicles to LFP, with the only use not suited to the iron battery cells being for high-performance electric sports cars.

There is one additional benefit to the automaker and eventually its customers: LFP batteries are significantly cheaper to produce. We are confident in the future that Tesla will pass on the cost savings to consumers; however, demand still far exceeds supply so for now this should be viewed as an effective measure to satisfy production needs for battery cells.
