Sentry Mode Update Adds the Ability to Stream Live Footage from a Tesla’s Cameras
Tesla issued a software update to its cars in conjunction with an update to its iOS mobile app that enables owners to stream live Sentry Mode footage.
The feature is being called Sentry Mode Live Camera Access, with release notes describing its functionality as allowing owners to remotely view their car’s surroundings when parked to confirm the safety of their environment before returning to their car.
Premium Connectivity is required to enable the functionality, which is a $10/month subscription that adds music and video streaming as well as live traffic visualization. Tesla includes a 30-day trial of Premium Connectivity on Model 3 and Model Y, and a full year on Model S and Model X. Earlier Tesla vehicles have included lifetime Premium Connectivity access, which the automaker is no longer offering on new purchases.
Sentry Mode Live Camera Access is being rolled out in Tesla software update 2021.36.8. An update has already been released for Tesla’s iOS app, and the feature should be coming to Android at a later date.
Live Camera footage is end-to-end encrypted for added security, and can’t be accessed by Tesla directly. Users can enable it in Controls > Safety & Security.
Real Talk
This essentially makes Tesla’s Sentry Mode a fully-functioning Ring doorbell, complete with the ability to talk to pedestrians and passerby's through the car’s speaker. Elon Musk says this feature is great for practical jokes, and we wouldn’t disagree with him.
We digress. There’s utility to it, as we know many Tesla owners like to keep track of what’s going on around their car at all times. This seems like a natural extension of the overall potential of Sentry Mode, which was initially a free update that made Tesla’s vehicles the most secure on the market overnight.
It also adds to the functionality of Premium Connectivity, which Tesla has made an up-sell for owners after only recently shortening the trial period on Model 3 and Model Y to one month. The higher the percentage of vehicles that the automaker can monetize with subscriptions, the more revenue they can bring in after delivery.
Tesla owners are particularly fond of getting new features to play with, and this will be no exception. It’s perfect not only for Halloween and the practical jokes that Elon is expecting owners to come up with, but also for enhanced security when parking in less-than-ideal areas. We’re sure owners will find a lot of creative uses for Sentry Mode Live Camera Access.
