Tesla Attempts to Redefine the North American Charging Standard

Tesla is opening up its proprietary charger design to all automakers, with the goal of creating a new standard for electric vehicle charging in North America.

Tesla’s charger design is the only widely-utilized charger that can support all types of charging, including AC and DC fast charging, within a sleek universal plug.

Beyond taking up significantly less space and weight as a large standardized CCS plug, Tesla’s connector is capable of DC charging at a rate of up to 1 MW — up to 20x quicker than the previous-generation standard found at most third-party DC fast chargers.

Tesla is making its EV connector design open to all companies and automakers worldwide, and changing its name to the North American Charging Standard.

Tesla’s North American Charging Standard is already the most common charging standard in North America, outnumbering CCS two-to-one, according to Tesla.

Meanwhile, the Supercharging Network already has over 60% more chargers than all CCS networks combined.

Effective immediately Tesla has made the design and specification files for their charging connector available online to all.

Real Talk

We’ve had a lot of thoughts about this becoming a reality when automotive startup Aptera created a petition posing the idea, and we’re glad to see that Tesla is establishing a charging standard — whether automakers and charging networks choose to participate or not.

Tesla is boldly taking the step by calling its connector the North American Charging Standard, and establishing a NACS acronym.

Third-party charging networks have already committed to adding NACS chargers, and the sleekness and overwhelming prevalence could sway automakers as well.

By virtue of Tesla’s production outnumbering all other makes and models of electric vehicles, Tesla’s connector is already the top in North America. It’s only a matter of time before it replaces the comparatively-outdated charging connector used on all non-Tesla electric vehicles.

History is perhaps being made as Tesla’s charger is destined to become the universal standard in North America.
